Rapper profile: Lil Wayne – Part 1
Get it how you live! Lil’ Wayne is actually Dwayne Carter, born September 27, 1982. He grew up in the tough streets of New Orleans , Louisiana and loved the music scene. He would freestyle rap at parties and even on the street. At a mere 11 years old, he was taken in by rap moguls at Cash Money records and signed as their youngest artist. (Not before he visited the studios everyday, and leaving “rap” messages on their answering machines.) At age 16, he became a member of the hip-hop group Hot Boys. Rappers Juvenile, Turk and B.G. comprised this edgy group. Here, the thin, wiry star made himself known as a true emerging rap talent. During this time, a tragic event changed Lil’ Wayne’s life. While playing with a gun, he shot himself in the chest, and nearly bled to death (the spot is marked now with a tattoo reading “bang bang”). Lil’ Wayne’s stepfather went to jail for having an unregistered gun, and was later abducted and murdered. Cash Money boss, Brian (aka: “Birdman”) Williams took Lil’ Wayne in, promising to raise him. To this day, Birdman is considered as a father to his young protege’. This incident , along with his lifestyle offered Lil’ Wayne the real idea of “gangsta” and he was able to rap in earnest about life on the streets, even at a young age. However , it has been said that his rhymes did not include swearing for many years at his mother’s request.
His first solo album “Tha Block is Hot” was released in 1999, and met with decent critical reviews, and an even stronger popularity of the title track. Since then, 5 more albums have been released, with at least two more already in the works. At age 21, his album, “Tha Carter” was released , and the next year “Tha Carter II” hit the airwaves, catching the number 2 spot on the Billboard’s hot 100. Since then, the album has gone certified platinum. Singles like “Fireman”, “Stuntin Like My Daddy” and others have given Lil’ Wayne the recognition he deserves. He continues to rap and now owns a subsidiary record company to Cash Money, titled Young Money. Lil’ Wayne has proven he is capable of rapping, producing and writing.
As for his personal life , he has one daughter. He contines to have a close relationship with Brian “Birdman” Williams, often including him in his tunes. Together they purchased a skybox in the Louisiana Superdome. An arrest for unprescribed Xanax hasn’t hindered his positive style or outlook. He continues helping others. Following Hurricane Katrina, he returned to his homestate and helped raise funds to assist the needy. He also is determined to help new and upcoming rappers, to give back for the hand he received.
Lil’ Wayne is a force to be reckoned with. A talented, award winning superstar who gives back to the community and people who saw him through some very hard times. Long may the Birdman’s “son” fly!
