Carmen: A Hip Hopera
Description
A contemporary, urban retelling of the classic story, Carmen: A Hip Hopera follows the life of a police sergeant whose world is turned upside down when an irresistible woman enters his life. Through song, the star-studded cast tells the tale of their passionate romance and tragic demise. It’s Moulin Rouge done hip-hop style! Amazon.com
Recasting Bizet’s classic opera as a musical tale in the ‘hood, Carmen: A Hip Hopera proves that the plot’s not the thing. By retaining the story but jettisoning Bizet’s individual musical numbers that propel the tragedy to its inevitable conclusion, this Carmen founders on familiarity: it’s just another soap opera about two lovers whose tryst proves fatal. Occasionally, the music quotes Bizet’s famous themes, but most of the rapping and singing sound interchangeable. What makes this Carmen worth seeing, however, is the scintillating performance of Beyoncé Knowles (of the trio Destiny’s Child) in the lead role. From her first entrance in a dazzling red gown, Knowles shows off a vibrant, magnetic personality; the camera loves her, as her group’s many music videos have shown, but they only hint at how impressively she holds the screen. Can she act? The jury’s still out, but Carmen: A Hip Hopera–however disappointing this hybrid is in most ways–showcases a compelling movie-star presence. –Kevin Filipski

I think the movie was great, even if beyonce doesn’t seem that type of girl, she still did a great job. Even more then the movie itself, i just loved the “making of carmen” that u can find in the special features. I think it’s worth buying!
Have fun!

Beyonce Knowles made the audience faint, you could see a whole different side of her. She proved to the world that she could not only song well, but could act well also. I loved the movie so well I went out and got the Soundtrack too. I recommend this movie to anybody and everybody who likes a drama.

This film is a disaster. It is unfortunate that talented people (Mos Def) had to “dumb down” to share a screen with Beyonce’ Knowles. Ms. Knowles needs to stick to shaking her behind because acting is not a talent she possesses. The music is a joke and the “all-star cast” needs to spend more time trying to salvage their music careers. Do not waste precious minutes of your life watching this train wreck. Watch Carmen Jones instead and see just how it’s supposed to be done.
